I. Roller Combination Principle

Asphalt pavement construction needs multiple machines working together.Common combination: Tandem-drum roller + Pneumatic tired rollerSingle-drum roller is not used for asphalt surface.

II. Three-stage Rolling Process

1. Initial rolling – stabilization

• Equipment: Tandem-drum vibratory roller (static or light vibration)

• Function: Stabilize mixture, prevent shoving and cracking

• Key: Follow paver closely, high temperature, slow speed

2. Intermediate rolling – densification

• Equipment: Tandem-drum vibratory roller (high frequency, low amplitude)

• Function: Reach designed density

• Key: Main compaction stage, most passes

3. Final rolling – finishing

• Equipment: Pneumatic tired roller or tandem-drum static

• Function: Remove wheel marks, improve smoothness, seal surface

• Key: No vibration, last pass

III. Standard Combination

• Conventional asphalt pavement:Initial: Tandem-drum static / light vibrationIntermediate: Tandem-drum vibrationFinal: Pneumatic tired roller

• Bridge deck / thin asphalt:Mainly use tandem-drum roller, little or no pneumatic tired roller.

IV. Key Points

• Initial rolling stabilizes, intermediate rolling densifies, final rolling finishes.

• Tandem-drum: compaction

• Pneumatic tired roller: smoothness, kneading, finishing

• Sequence: edge first, middle later; light first, heavy later; slow first, fast later.

• No sudden brake, turning or stopping on hot asphalt.
