What Are the Different Types of Compaction Wheels for Road Rollers?

2025-09-29

There are various types of compaction wheels for road rollers, and the following are the common ones:

  • Smooth Drum: The surface of a smooth drum is flat and smooth, which results in a flat and smooth compacted surface. It is the most widely used and suitable for compaction in projects such as various pavements, cushion layers, airport runways, and squares. Smooth-drum road rollers come in different forms, including single-drum and double-drum types.

  • Grooved Drum: The surface of a grooved drum has grooves. It exerts high unit pressure and can compact thick layers, making it suitable for compaction of subgrades and embankments.

  • Sheepfoot Drum: Also known as sheep’s foot roller or tamping roller, it is a roller with many rectangular lugs or "feet". It is particularly suitable for compacting soil and silty clay in road construction work.

  • Pneumatic Tire Drum: A pneumatic tire drum consists of multiple inflated tires. The tire pressure can be adjusted, the weight can be increased or decreased, and the unit pressure is variable. During the compaction process, it produces a kneading effect, which makes the compacted layer evenly dense without damaging the pavement. It is suitable for compaction of cushion layers in roads, squares, and other projects.

  • Grid Drum: A grid drum is a drum with a steel bar network, which forms a grid pattern on the steel drum. It can generate high contact pressure and has almost no pinching effect on compaction work. It is suitable for well-graded coarse soil, weathered rock, as well as subgrade and base course construction in road projects.
